Catherine Bird is one of Australia's leading Equine Natural Health Consultants and is based in Sydney. She is a qualified Aromatherapist, Medical Herbalist, Kinesiologist, Remedial Massage Therapist and is a Certified Equine Sports Massage Therapist (USA) specializing in animals. Her experience working with horses goes back more than a decade. She's followed newborn thoroughbred foals through all stages of racing, worked with Olympic level competitors, NSW Mounted Police, mounts selected by various countries at the Sydney Paralympic Games 2000, and horses special to their owners. You will also find her working with dogs, cats and she has a successful human practice in Randwick.
Catherine is a member of the Holistic Animal Therapy Association of Australia and the Australian Traditional Medicine Society and actively promotes the use of natural therapies with animals with articles published in magazines in Australia, United States and Europe. Her desire to share her knowledge makes her a popular feature on television programs such as Animal Hospital in Australia, which is often sold on to the Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet.
Catherine is authoring a series of books about natural therapies for horses, drawing on case histories gathered from her experiences. Her book, Horse Scents, has sold successfully around the world and is now out of print. A Healthy Horse the Natural Way was commissioned and released by New Holland Publishers in Australia, New Zealand and UK with The Lyons Press distributing in the USA.
She maintains contact with many leading therapists throughout the world so that information can be exchanged to enhance the global desire to further the healing of all animals, and support owners in their quest for knowledge and understanding. Her door is always open to overseas visitors and she enjoys talking about the wellbeing of horses with anyone who's questions come from the heart.
As a clinic presenter Catherine offers weekend courses on therapies for horses in most major centers within Australia and travels overseas to the United States and Europe on a regular basis. Her first love of aromatherapy and the use of essential oils translate beautifully to her work with horses and is her favorite clinic to present. It is also the most requested talk at international conferences.
Catherine finds it difficult to decide what her favorite breed or discipline is within the equestrian scene as every horse has something special to offer. However, the athleticism and mental strength of the dressage horse provides a constant stimulus to refining her work and she has recently been appointed the metropolitan delegate to the NSW Dressage Council.
